Jo Thompson offers a full service garden design consultancy in London for clients seeking an outside space which is beautiful, functional, relaxing, high/mid/low maintenance and generally a nice place to be.

You can have a garden even in the smallest of London spaces. Pizza ovens, swings, vegetable beds, chicken runs, treehouses (sometimes without the tree): you name it, you can have it in that town garden.

My task is to help you to have the space you need: I can make a tiny courtyard garden a useable space that is beautiful to look at. I might include two or three destinations within the garden in order to make it interesting to look at, with perhaps a carefully-positioned tree or some well-selected furniture and pots. a pergola, whether a contemporary galvanised steel frame or a traditional oak walkway, give height and also much-needed privacy from overlooking houses.

There's only a lightwell? Well...... you can plant up the wall: living walls and green walls are now developed specifically for dwellings, and are not too scary, I promise. Make the most of that vertical space by growing a few herbs and some cut-and-come-again salad leaves there.

Roof terraces in London can be stunning: once we know the load-bearing capacity, and after the shelter and privacy requirements are met through sensible, informed, beautiful design, you can have pretty much whatever you want up there: I have in the past put on roof terraces hot tubs, a glade (oh yes) of silver birch, a city wildlife garden, a kitchen, a computer terminal complete with sunshade and waterproof storage, and a games console station. Stone, tiles, steel, timber, artificial grass, reinforced glass: again, careful selection of materials for flooring and balustrades will make your city space YOUR city space.

Working together over the garden plans

I work collaboratively with you, listening to your needs, to ensure that the garden design brief is clear and is interpreted correctly in the plan.

However large or small your outdoor space, we work together to create a distinctive, imaginative yet practical garden to suit your needs and budget, listening carefully to your requirements, ideas and wishes. In particular, when developing the garden design plan, I aim to reflect as closely as possible your style tastes and existing design choices home so that there is a strong visual relationship between the inside and outside spaces. I often work alongside architects and interior designers to ensure that this can be achieved.

Design without limits

I work closely with a select number of trusted landscape contractors, water feature and lighting design specialists who will carry out my specifications to the highest standard. We ensure the garden design process from initial concept to project completion is smooth and seamless.

All the plants are sourced from specialist nurseries whose quality is assured and for a more instant effect I can bring in mature specimens. I can specify and source seating, fencing, play equipment, storage solutions, trellis, obelisks, water features, furniture and planters, bespoke or off the peg.
