Created to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the long-running BBC Radio 4 programme, the garden will bring to life one of the series’ most familiar locations: Bridge Farm. Inspired by the fictional farm’s organic ethos and strong sense of community, the garden will feature elements inspired by life at Bridge Farm, including orchard fruit trees set within a wildflower meadow, a wildlife pond, a potting bench and references to the farm’s cheese-making heritage.

The design also draws on recent storylines from the programme, imagining the Bridge Farm garden being lovingly replanted following the devastating sewage spill that affected the farm in the drama.

Designed to come alive in the colder months, the Winter Garden celebrates structure, bark and silhouette. Frost and low light reveal the sculptural beauty of stems and seedheads, while soft drifts of grasses and a palette of silvers, russets and greens create a sense of quiet vibrancy.

The project – the largest undertaken at Rosemoor in recent years – took two years to complete and was realised entirely by the garden’s talented in-house team of 35. Their work included planting 1,612 bulbs, 1,120 herbaceous plants, 260 shrubs, 234 grasses and 96 trees. In a sustainable approach, 170 tonnes of concrete from old garden features were excavated, crushed on site and reused as hardcore for the new design.

Speaking about the garden, Jo said:

“It’s been such a pleasure to create a garden for the winter months – a time of year I find incredibly beautiful. When the leaves have fallen, you really see the structure, the bark, the silhouettes, and the way light moves through a space. I hope visitors will find real pleasure in walking through the garden and seeing the quiet magic that winter brings.”

Set in a fairytale Kent village, this intimate garden shares a wall with a Grade I listed castle and reflects a seamless blend of history, craftsmanship and natural beauty. Designed as a journey of discovery, it balances formality and softness with meandering brick paths, a winding rill from the original well, and richly layered planting that offers privacy, texture and seasonal colour.

One of the judges said: “Simple design with beautifully complex plantings and material construction. The hardscape is amazing in this design… from the paving to the wall construction. Wow! This design has a lovely mix of informal (meadow-like) and formal (topiary) plantings, paired with the detailed stone work… makes it all magical.”

This year, the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) awarded 59 awards across residential, non-residential, small gardens, planting design, specialty projects, show gardens, and outdoor lighting. These awards honour excellence in landscape design, judged on the basis of difficulty, craftsmanship, attention to detail, and execution.
