We were delighted to see Jo featured as the Saturday Telegraph cover story, sharing her strategies for creating a sense of space and atmosphere in a small garden — including lessons from her own village garden in Kent.
The article sets out 16 practical tips, from choosing plants and keeping fences simple, to adding height with climbers and creating year-round interest with bulbs and evergreens.
As Jo explains: “You can’t necessarily green out everything, but once your garden is full of beautiful things, the eye won’t be attracted to that rusty padlock or gate that bothered you.”
Her advice encourages gardeners to think carefully about materials, keep furniture compact, and avoid clutter, while still finding space for the joy of roses, parasols, and magical details.
To explore more of Jo’s love of romantic gardens, you can read her book The New Romantic Garden, (link to book) or join her Substack newsletter for weekly posts, conversations, and design advice.
